#4 - AVM TREEFORT

Updated: Nov 28, 2025

LOCATION: Arsha Vidya Mandir School, Chennai, India.
DATE: April 2016
HEIGHT: 3 floors from 1,2 meters, to 3,6 meters
SURFACE: 18 m²
MATERIALS: All recycled and up-cycled materials from previous construction sites. Padak and Teak wood, decommissioned solar panels & fibre glass roof.

Built for a school in collaboration with Waste Less Auroville and Upcycling Auroville, this treehouse stands on a century-old neem tree and serves as a space for children to learn about the natural environment and sustainability. The AVM Treefort was envisioned by the students themselves as a meaningful project to recycle waste materials as part of their waste-less education on garbage. The children were deeply involved in transforming it into a valuable learning space and created poster presentations to express what the treehouse meant to them.

Upcycled materials were used throughout: tetra packs painted by the children for the walls, restored windows and doors, old solar panels repurposed as roofing, and naturally shaped, locally sourced hardwoods.
