LOCATION: The Learning Community, Auroville, Tamil Nadu, India.
DATE: November 2019
HEIGHT: 9m
SURFACE: 9m²
MATERIALS: Based on a traditional South Indian ‘keeth house’: casuarina beams, Areca nut (pakku maram) planks, woven coconut (Keeth) roof, coconut pod (palai) binders, and coconut rope.
As the name suggests and given by its students, the Melody Treehouse was used as a musical classroom for children to experience and express their musical aspirations in a space among the trees. Not only was it a convenient space slightly further away from the other classrooms acting as a sound barrier, it also gave the children a sense of liberty to play as they felt. The Learning Community (TLC) creates a space where children and adults, by living and working together, could grow more conscious of their inmost being and learn to know, perfect and transform their instrument (body, life and mind) into the light of the spirit.
The treehouse was later adapted and given a new name as per the cyclone during which it was built in again, Treehouse Nivar. The musical classroom was given new life and became a space where children could find a moment of silence during their free time and a quiet space to study. This tall tamarind tree has hosted many children and continues to stand strong while the school turns the page to yet another chapter of its book.
